Nursery - Hungry Caterpillar
CURRICULUM FOR Summer 1
This half term our topic is ‘Come Outside."
AS READERS
We will be reading books linked to our half term theme: “Come Outside,” these include “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” and “Oliver’s Vegetables.”
We will also retell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk using Talk4Writing.
The children are also playing Fred Games from RWI, beginning to recognise the picture cues for u, b, f, e, l, h, r, j, v, y, w, z and learning some sounds.
AS WRITERS
To improve the children’s fine and gross motor skills we will be doing activities that encourage the control of the whole arm movement using scarves. We have funky fingers activities and name writing in the morning to strengthen the children’s posture, shoulder and elbow movement, hand grip, pincer, and tripod grip. The children are encouraged to mark make using a variety of different media: post its, notepads, paper, card etc,
AS MATHEMATICIANS
The children will be learning their prepositions: in, out, under, on top etc. placing an object and beginning to use the vocabulary for it. We will continue to explore 2D and 3D shapes, especially in our environment.
We will continue to subitise objects (by not counting) but using the approach of “What do you notice? How do you see it?”
We will also sequence routines/growth/life cycles
AS EXPLORERS
This half term we are focusing on growth, we will take the opportunity to plant seeds, and learn how to take care of them. We will look at lifecycles, answering our Big Question: where does a butterfly come from?
The children will also discover who St George is and what he represents.
PSED
Children follow Jigsaw and Happy Minds. We also have circle times and on the spot opportunities to develop PSED skills.
PE
Lessons will take place every Tuesday morning with our PE Staff. The children will need to come to nursery wearing their PE kits.
“STAY AND PLAY” sessions.
Parents and carers are welcome to stay for a lovely, calm 45 mins on a Friday morning, to share their child’s learning. It might be craft activities, cooking, playing games, sharing books, watching live sessions, or even looking at their child’s learning journals.
HOME LEARNING
Please ensure that you are logged on to Class Dojo so that you can see what your child has been doing. Photos and messages will be posted regularly to show you what your child has been learning at nursery.
DROP OFF INFORMATION
We are now encouraging you to drop your child off at the Nursery gate, so they can put their own coat away, find their picture/name independently, vote for the story at the end of the session and go into the classroom confidently and independently.
