YEAR 3 - LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER & THE BORROWERS
CURRICULUM FOR SUMMER 1
As Readers
We will be reading the book, ‘The Tin Forest”. As part of this, we will infer meaning, explore vocabulary, make predictions, retrieve information and summarise what we have read.
Our whole class reading sessions will be linked to deforestation. We will be focussing on non-fiction texts and their features. There will be a focus on developing fluency and expression. In addition, we shall practise the skills of retrieval, skimming, scanning and dictionary work.
As writers
We will investigate plants and forests, What is deforestation? From the book, ‘The Tin Forest’ by Helen Ward, we will wonder if can a junk land become a wonderland. (Descriptive narrative) What are the effects of deforestation? (Explanation text) non-fiction chronological report.
As Mathematicians
We will learn about mass and capacity and we will finish our half-term learning about money.
Key Vocabulary: Multiplication, division, recall, place value, properties, inverse operation, addition and subtraction, pay, change, note, coins, kg, g, mass, capacity, measurement, scale, amount.
AS SCIENTISTS
Year 3 will learn about plants. We will learn the functions of the roots, how the water is transported within plants, and What are the functions of leaves in flowering plants. Also, children will identify and label the parts of the plants and what are some ways flowering plants disperse their seeds.
Key Vocabulary: seed, bulb, root, stem, leaf, flower, soil, fruit, seeding, blossom, deforestation, dispersal, etc.
AS GEOGRAPHIST
Learn about rainforests, where are they located, their features, effects and causes of the climate in a rainforest. Children will investigate how life in the rainforest differs from ours.
AS ARTISTS
We will be exploring botanical Art through the artist Henri Rousseau. Children will draw by observing different plants, flowers, trees and scenarios. Finding details and investigating techniques to mix colours.
Key Vocabulary: media, charcoal, line, tone, shade, pattern, texture, colour.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:
Pupils are to investigate Islam and focus on some of the key elements of the Islamic religion, including key beliefs, holy books, places of worship and main celebrations. What is Islamic Art?
PSHE:
Relationships (Jigsaw) Children will discuss family roles and responsibilities, friendship, keeping themselves safe online and being a Global Citizen. And we will explore the ENGAGE during our MyHappyMind lessons. (MHM)
