YEAR 6 - ASLAN & GRYFFINDOR
CURRICULUM FOR SUMMER 1
This half term we will focus on History and The Atlantic Slave Trade. We will be learning about the history of slavery before exploring the triangular slave trade between Britain, West Africa and the Americas. We will also learn about the life of Harriet Tubman and how she helped to free slaves during her lifetime.
AS READERS
We will read the text ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar, while continuing to build core reading skills including vocabulary and word meaning in context, inference, prediction, retrieval and summary.
AS WRITERS
We will be writing a range texts in a variety of genres linked to The Atlantic Slave Trade and our core text ‘Holes’. We will build on our writing skills and become more cohesive and sophisticated writers, to produce texts that are engaging and appropriate for the intended audience. Children will write both fiction and non-fiction pieces of extended writing. Using ‘Holes’ as inspiration, we will write a fast-paced wild west adventure story with vivid description and dialogue. We will be linking our non-fiction writing to our history topic to write a biography about Harriet Tubman and why she is such an important historical figure.
AS MATHEMATICIANS
We will be continuing to develop our number fluency as well as arithmetic and reasoning problem skills. Our main areas of learning will be shape, statistics, algebra and consolidation of arithmetic skills. After SATs, we will be exploring the Fibonacci sequence and how it is used in real life.
AS SCIENTISTS
Our topic this half term will be 'living things and their habitats'. We will take an in-depth view at classifying animals, plants and micro-organisms. We will recap our knowledge of broad groups of organisms before taking a detailed look at the Linnaeus classification system, how it works and how different species of organisms that are closely related can be identified.
SPECIALIST SUBJECTS
Children have fortnightly DT and Spanish lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Specialist teachers teach these subjects.
In DT, the children will continue to learn about mechanical systems that use cams, pulleys, and gears.
In Spanish, the children will continue to learn about the main festivals in Spain and begin to recognise questions. Following on from this, the children will extend their learning to the theme of holidays. They will research holiday destinations in Spanish-speaking countries and apply the language they know to describe holiday pictures and write holiday postcards.
PE
Lessons will continue to take place on Thursdays. This term, pupils will be learning cricket, rounders and athletics. Please ensure pupils have the correct PE kit each week.
HOME LEARNING
In Year 6, pupils will receive English and Maths homework every Friday that must be handed in on Wednesday of the following week, which will be marked as a class. Please remind your child of the sanctions that are in place for non-completion of homework. In addition, pupils will be given a list of 20 spellings from the statutory spelling list each week, which they are expected to learn in preparation for a spelling test every Monday. (Pupils are expected to demonstrate learning using EdShed or, if this cannot be accessed at home, by writing spellings in their homework book).
Please continue to read regularly with your child at home, as reading regularly will help your child’s vocabulary knowledge, spelling and writing skills. Furthermore, we ask that you encourage your child to learn their multiplication tables up to 12. This is an ongoing expectation until your child can confidently recall them in a mixed order and using inverse operations. (Times Tables Rock Stars should be accessed to help them).
