Summer 1
As Readers
Children will continue to work on their phonic knowledge using the Read Write Inc scheme. Children that participate within these groups will receive a book suitable for their reading level and a reading for pleasure book.
During whole class reading, the children will be focusing on a range of texts relating to Queen Elizabeth II, Memorable Monarchs, The Imperial state crown, The Crown Jewels and Trooping the colour. Each session the children will target areas which will support their reading and comprehension skills such as; introducing new vocabulary, fluency and expression, predication, inferencing and retrieval skills.
As Writers
The children will be exploring a new book called ‘The Queen’s Wardrobe’. This is a fascinating book that looks into the life and clothes of Queen Elizabeth II. Children will learn about key events that happened during the Queens life and that outfits that were worn for these occasions. Focusing on specific vocabulary, children will learn how to write a descriptive narrative that help the reader to visualise the setting and clothes the Queen might have worn as well as learning about key events that happened in history.

As Mathematicians
Children will be comparing and looking at the difference between capacity and volume while using a range of containers to explore and investigate.
They will then move onto fractions and introduced to a variety of parts and wholes. Exploring what equal parts look like and how we can find them as well as, finding what the differences between a unit-fraction and a non- unit fraction.
Finally, we will focus on time and understanding what each aspect of a clock shows to how many hours in a day
Vocabulary focus – Litres, millimetres, part, whole, quarter, numerator, denominator, unit faction equivalent
As Scientists
We will be describing and comparing different seeds and bulbs. Children will explain why seeds are dispersed and what conditions affect germination. Through experiments they will observe and describe the changes from a seed to a plant.
Vocabulary focus – grow, germinate, shoot, seedling, dispersed, bulb, food, light, shade, cool, space
As Historians
Children will be stepping back in time and looking at the history of Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Victoria and other relatives. They will learn about the monarch and the major changes that happened throughout history. Finally, the similarities between royalty.
Vocabulary focus – Monarch, reign, generations, heir, Empire, inventions, Great Exhibition, sources
As Artists
We will be looking at the artist Gustav Klimt. Children will look at different prints within art, patterns, textures and collages.
