Vision Statement

We can be anything, dream anything, create anything, and become anything, because we believe in ourselves and in each other.

Expectation

How we ensure this happens

Pupils leave Freshwaters with a love of reading and books

A wide variety of books that are read across the year groups. Books chosen to include all pupils, but specifically chosen to engage boys and to aspire them to read further.

Pupils are confident to speak aloud and voice their opinions about a range of subjects

Opportunities to develop oracy and speaking aloud. Reading, poetry, discussions, presentations and debating to build confidence and responsibility for their actions now and in the future

Pupils have a broad understanding of the world around them and are culturally enriched

A broad based curriculum that links to the text the children are reading ensuring that their knowledge is expanded on and they are challenged to develop further

Pupils can explain their reasoning and problem solving skills, both independently and collaboratively

Development of the maths curriculum with a focus on vocabulary and manipulatives to support reasoning and problem solving.

Freshwater’s aims

We work hard to ensure:

• A creative and engaging approach to whole class reading that develops confidence in reading aloud and encourages open discussion. Targeted books that are inclusive, diverse and inspirational for all.

• Broadening pupils vocabulary and promoting oracy through presentations, drama and role play across all year groups.

• Developing confidence and self-esteem for pupils, enabling them to take on a wide range of school responsibilities and roles, allowing pupil voice to be heard.

• Ensuring a broad and creative curriculum, full of skills and global aspects, that is accessible for all pupils regardless of background and offers a wide range of opportunities to develop this both within the classroom and beyond.

• A clear understanding from all staff that it is the pupil’s barriers to their learning that we focus on and not a label that has been assigned to a child.
