Pupils Learn About Democracy on Trip to House of Commons
Posted: 10th June 2025Our School Council had the incredible opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament in London. The visit was both inspiring and educational, giving our pupils a real insight into the heart of British democracy. One of the highlights of the visit was stepping into the grandeur of the House of Lords and seeing the incredible detail of the golden throne, which is used by the reigning monarch during the State Opening of Parliament. Walking through the historic chambers, they saw stunning statues and artwork that told the story of Britain’s rich political heritage.
The children learned how democracy works in the UK, from how laws are made to the importance of voting. They discovered how Members of Parliament and Lords debate and make decisions that affect the whole country. They also explored the fascinating history of the original Palace of Westminster — learning that it was originally built in the Middle Ages and has been rebuilt and restored over time. One highlight was hearing the dramatic story of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators tried to blow up Parliament! It was a truly memorable day that brought learning to life and helped our School Council understand the important role they play in representing the voices of their classmates.
