Young writers are learning the difference between fake and real news as they take on the role of journalists.
Year 5 pupils at Freshwaters Primary Academy took part in a workshop with the Guardian newspaper looking at the media and how it reports.
They were given roles as news editors, sub editors and reporters as they learnt more about how newspapers work.
Anne Apperley, Year 5 teacher, said: “The workshop acted as a launchpad into work we are going to do around journalism next term. It was a fantastic hook to get their attention.
“We will be looking at how to structure an article, create balance in an article and how language can bias opinion. They will have to think about how to tell the truth, be factual but write in such a way that is positive and of interest to the reader. Pupils will then look at what is important to them and what they want to write about, based on school, Harlow, their family or the community.
“What is really important is that pupils use their key skills to infer what is real news and making sure their sources are accurate. They are using their citizenship skills which are really important.
“They are really enjoying it.”
The free resources, funded by Google, have been made available to the school from the Guardian Foundation and the National Literacy Trust through the News Wise project.
